Behavioural Observation Audiometry

At Aaroh Early Intervention Centre – Cochlear Implant Center, our Behavioural Observation Audiometry (BOA) test is designed to evaluate the hearing ability of infants and young children who cannot respond verbally or through traditional hearing tests. This method helps our audiologists observe natural responses to sound, ensuring early detection of hearing issues and timely intervention.

Behavioural Observation Audiometry (BOA)

BOA is a crucial part of our pediatric audiology services and plays a key role in identifying hearing loss during the first months of life. By monitoring a baby’s behavioral responses—such as eye movement, head turn, blinking, or body startle—our specialists can accurately determine how the child perceives different sounds and frequencies.

Our Behavioural Observation Audiometry process includes:

  • Detailed Case History: Gathering developmental and medical background to understand potential risk factors for hearing loss.
  • Sound Presentation: Introducing calibrated sounds of different intensities and frequencies in a controlled, quiet environment.
  • Observation of Behavioural Responses: Monitoring subtle reactions such as eye widening, startle reflex, or cessation of movement in response to sound.
  • Parent Involvement: Educating and involving parents in recognizing and reporting their child’s reactions to everyday sounds.
  • Cross-Verification with Objective Tests: Using BOA results in combination with OAE, BERA, or ASSR tests for accurate diagnosis and management planning.
  • Follow-Up and Guidance: Providing recommendations for further testing, hearing aids, or early intervention programs based on the assessment results.

Behavioural Observation Audiometry is safe, gentle, and non-invasive, making it ideal for infants under six months and children who cannot participate in conditioned hearing tests. Early identification of hearing loss allows for prompt treatment and prevents delays in speech and language development.

At Aaroh, we combine advanced diagnostic methods with compassionate care to ensure that even our youngest patients receive accurate, early hearing assessments. Our goal is to detect hearing challenges as soon as possible, empowering families to take the right steps toward a sound-filled future.
